Harbor Freight Tools

Challenges

Urban Sign Group began a partnership with Harbor Freight Tools in early 2011 when the brand was in the early stages of implementing an expeditious new store growth strategy. Quickly adopting new project management processes and effective coordination with an expansive team of stakeholders was critical in keeping up with the fast-paced program. Additionally, Harbor Freight’s signage strategy demanded their sign vendors pursue the most prominent and pronounced signage building storefronts would allow. The constraints presented a challenge in navigating local sign codes and securing necessary variances.

How We Solve Them

Urban Sign Group quickly adapted to accommodate the demanding new store program. Sign project managers work directly with the HFT real estate team to coordinate the new store signage plan at the onset of each new store location. The municipal sign code is researched and interpreted, and signage maximized according to the square footage authorized. Once signage drawings are approved, Urban Sign Group begins applying for and obtaining sign permits, including attending any necessary variance hearings.

Urban Sign Group constantly communicates with the HFT construction team. As the store construction begins, project managers track project milestones, coordinate logistics, and ensure all signage is manufactured and installed according to brand and material standards. In the ten-plus years working with HFT, Urban Sign Group has never missed a store opening. In 2020 the organization doubled its service territory after being awarded the Wester Territory for new store construction.

In addition to serving the HFT Construction team, Urban Sign Group is also under contract with the HFT Facilities Maintenance team. Since 2011, Urban Sign Group has performed signage maintenance on all stores in their designated sign region and implemented several rebrands and LED retrofits. As reported by Service Channel metrics, Urban Sign Group has consistently been the highest performing sign vendor on the account.

[Urban Sign Group] continues to pride themselves on being able to provide the best workmanship, quality, timeliness and cost-effective performance in every aspect of our project. [They have] consistently delivered top-notch customer service, and outstanding ability to adapt to change, all while providing overall quality product. I would recommend Urban Sign Group for any retail project.
